ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This research addresses the importance of health as a theme in the publicdiscourse of military leaders in Brazil (especially those of the Army) with respect to the construction of a national identity during the Estado Novo period (1937-1945), with particular emphasis on the years during the Second World War. In pursuit of this theme, texts published in Nação Armada, revista civil-militar consagrada à segurança nacional (November 1939 to March 1947), are analyzed. An analysis is undertaken ofthe ways that military officers’ notions of national health issues (particularly as found in their soldiers), and also their belief in a need for interventions was crucial for the affirmation and legitimization of the Army as a political and ideological force decisive in the project towards “regeneration” of the Brazilian people and towards theelaboration of a “new nation” during Getúlio Vargas’s first term as president. Among the themes tackled by the magazine, those concerning public health were particularly focused on military recruitment, it being so visible and important during World War II.Extolling the value of good hygiene, physical fitness and even eugenics as fundamental to the making of any “citizen-soldier” as “qualified” to serve not only in war, but as an exemplary “New Brazilian Man,” the discourse promulgated in the Nação Armada is seen, in this analysis, as a means to historical comprehension of theideals and practices which shaped public approval of the Armed Forces as a group suitable and equipped to promote the “healing” and “strengthening” and “uplifting” ofthe republic in accord with the ideological assumptions of the “estadonovista” regime. Thus the present research aims to contribute to present-day historical inquiry into publichealth in Brazil during the first half of the 20th century in its several intersections with the debates in the political and social life in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Some experience about the organization of the military health system and the practice of military medicine in Cuba in the 19th century were presented. A literature review was made to collect data about this topic. The way in which the Cubans set the regulatory basis for the military health system during the independence wars was put forward. In the Ten-Year War 1868-1878, optimal organization of the military health system was not accomplished, but accumulated experience laid the foundations for the creation of the Military Health Corps in 1895 Independence War. The work of Cuban surgeons in this last war was scientifically documented by Medical Colonel Enrique Núñez de Villavicencio y Palomino, submitted to the Society of Clinical Studies in Havana and published in the Archives of the Society of Clinical Studies of Havana in 1889. It may be said that the meritorious performance of the Cuban physicians under the independence war conditions in the 19th century offer some interesting pieces of experience for the contemporary military medicine.

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to study the prevalence and contributing factors of head lice among military education schoolchildren. To investigate the prevalence, all students [3020] in the military schools in Zarka were screened for head lice infestation. To study the contributing factors, structured questionnaires were filled out by the researchers for 266 students [126 who were infested and the rest were free from head lice]. The overall prevalence of head lice was 4.2% [126 of 3020]. The prevalence of pediculosis captious was significantly higher among secondary schoolchildren aged 15-18 years [5.2%] than primary schoolchildren [3.6%] and among school boys [6.3%] than secondary school girls [3.9%]. The prevalence was influenced by age, sex, family size, house occupancy and father's employment. Head lice can be considered a serious public heath problem among schoolchildren in Jordan. Control measures are badly needed
